Digital Archiving Futures

 

Research Centre Digitalia, together with other Mikkeli Memory Campus organizations, organizes a three-day hybrid event called “Digital Archiving Futures” on the 4–6 of September 2024 in Mikkeli, Finland and online stream.

The event is free of charge for participants and is part of the project “Memory Campus as an International Cluster for Information Management”, funded by the South Savo Regional Council from funds allocated to supporting the sustainable growth and vitality of regions.

Programme and Speakers

The main themes of the conference will be Data Spaces, Artificial Intelligence, and Cluster Collaboration, featuring speakers from the GLAM sector and information management field from Finland and across Europe.

The “Data Spaces” theme of the event will cover perspectives on data space, shared data and also more specifically development activities in different networks related to this topic.

The “Artificial Intelligence” aspect will highlight future possibilities for the use of artificial intelligence in the archive, library and museum sector, as well as in the field of information management in general.

The “Collaboration” theme brings together the strong role of cooperations in creating the future, in terms of co-development and co-creation, ecosystem collaboration and interconnection with other actors to develop a common future and knowledge.

September 5’s program includes Europeana Network Association Board Member and Time Machine RFC Editor Juha Henriksson’s presentation “Europeana, Time Machine, and the European data space for cultural heritage”.

Hybrid event, in Limassol and online, 29th May 2024 h. 15 CET
EUreka3D: Preserving Values through #MemoryTwins

On the occasion of the third EUreka3D project plenary, hosted by partner CUT in Limassol, a demo event was organized to present the latest development and services of the EUreka3D e-infrastructure dedicated to manage and share 3D cultural heritage datasets.

The event is organized in the context of the collaboration between EUreka3D and ARTEST Erasmus+ project, aiming at reinforcing education in the field of the Humanities in Europe and Mongolia, by adopting digital methods of research and education and harmonizing the development of both soft and digital skills during the study process.

This event follows the exceptional presentation of the EUreka3D project at the TwinIt celebration event and Fair in Brussels on 14/5, organized by the European Commission and Europeana Foundation in the presence of European authorities and Ministries of Culture from all over Europe, where project EUreka3D presented the efforts done by partner CUT Cyprus University of Technology, to digitally preserve the historical Lambousa boat in Limassol, which resulted in a top quality 3D model produced according to the VIGIE Study 2020/654 on quality in 3D digitisation of tangible cultural heritage.

The data, paradata and metadata for the Lambousa boat 3D model are hosted in the EUreka3D Data Hub, an e-infrastructure dedicated to managing and sharing high quality 3D cultural heritage datasets like the digital memory twin of Lambousa.

EUreka3D demo platform, currently under development by the EGI European Grid Initiative, is an outstanding resource to support the common European data space for cultural heritage, offering services and tools to institutions of any size and digital transformation level. The EUreka3D platform is based in Europe, and its pillars are accessibility, inclusiveness, and data security.

The demo event included presentations by speakers from EUreka3D project including Photoconsortium, Europeana, EGI, ACK Cyfronet AGH, UNESCO Chair on DCH at Cyprus University of Technology, and speakers from ARTEST who provided the point of view of supporting education programmes, especially on Digital Humanities, with 3D digitized cultural collections, in the light of strengthening a cross-boundaries collaboration and  actively participating in the capacity building and knowledge transfer programme of EUreka3D, thus broadening the project’s horizon beyond Europe. As an additional example of high quality digitization, the event included a presentation of the World Heritage Monuments preservation project in Finland, offered by Museovirasto as associate partner of EUreka3D.

EUreka3D presented at CS3 2024 Conference at CERN (Geneva, CH)

On the 13th of March 2024 the CERN, prestigious intergovernmental organisation that operates the largest particle physics laboratory in the world, hosted CS3 2024 Cloud Storage Synchronization and Sharing Conference as part of CERN’s TechWeek on Storage and Data Technologies.

Dr. Michał Orzechowski from Academic Computer Centre CYFRONET, one of EUreka3D partners, presented “Open Data Lifecycle Management with Onedata”  mentioned EUreka3D project as one of the case studies while referring to Onedata project.

The EUreka3D project addresses the growing need of enabling the digital transformation of the Cultural Heritage sector by modernising and reviewing internal processes of small institutions such as museums, galleries, libraries, archieves and archeological sites, by re-training their personnel to cope with the new digital responsibilities and roles, and by helping them review their infrastructure capacity, in particular with regard to the ability to process 3D contents.

Onedata is a high-performance data management system with a distributed, global infrastructure that enables users to access heterogeneous storage resources worldwide that is currently being used in many projects, including EUreka3D. Some of the key features of Onedata include:

  • Allowing users to establish a hierarchical structure of datasets, control multi-site replication and distribution using Quality-of-Service rules, and keep track of the dataset size statistics over time.
  • Supporting the annotation of datasets with metadata, which is crucial for organising and searching for specific data.
  • Protection mechanisms that prevent data and metadata modification, ensuring the integrity of the dataset in its final stage of preparation.
  • Archiving datasets for long-term preservation, enabling organisations to retain critical data for future use.
  • supporting of data-sharing mechanisms aligned with the idea of Open Data.

Theme of 2024 event: Information Technologies in the socio-cultural sphere, education and economy
EUreka3D presented at annual conference of Kyiv National University of Culture and Arts

On the 24th of April 2024 the annual conference by Kyiv National University of Culture and Arts took place under the theme of Information Technologies in the socio-cultural sphere, education and economy. The conference was held as a hybrid event in Kyiv and online, with a good participation of scientists, teachers, students of higher education institutions, master’s students, graduate students, doctoral students, and cultural practitioners.

Both a plenary session and work in parallel sessions with presentations of different initiatives and projects addressed the following topics:

1. Information technologies and systems of the socio-cultural sphere.
2. Digital transformation of education, science and the economy of the socio-cultural sphere.
3. Cyber ​​security and media literacy.
4. Digital technologies in cultural and creative industries.

As the only non-Ukrainian speaker, Valentina Bachi (Photoconsortium) presented EUreka3D as one part her presentation that included an introduction of Photoconsortium as association for the promotion of heritage collections and Europeana aggregator; an overview on Data Space For Cultural Heritage project; and finally the presentation of the work ongoing to create an e-infrastructure for CHIs as part of the tasks in EUreka3D project.

a prestigious event on 14th May will present the results of TwinIt 3D digitisation campaign and the outcomes of the most prominent 3D projects that are ongoing in Europe
EUreka3D at the TwinIt! Fair in Brussels

The TwinIt! Campaign is an initiative of the European Commission, coordinated by Europeana, which invited all EU Ministries of Culture to liaise with their national cultural institutions to submit at least one 3D digitised heritage asset to the common European data space for cultural heritage. The campaign collected 3D digitized assets representing European cultural heritage at risk, including monuments, buildings, sites and various other types of heritage objects.

The results of the campaign will be celebrated in a final Twin it! event on 14th May, in the prestigious Berlaymont venue in Brussels. This event will have three main components: a high-level conference, expert panel discussion and a Twin it! interactive exploration Fair, which will present various stories from the most valuable projects supporting the data space and 3D digital heritage.

In the context of the fair, EUreka3D will present the efforts done by partner CUT Cyprus University of Technology, to digitally preserve the historical Lambousa boat in Limassol, which resulted in a top quality 3D model produced according to the VIGIE Study 2020/654 on quality in 3D digitisation of tangible cultural heritage.

The model is made available for any stakeholder via the EUreka3D Data Hub and on Europeana.

A glimpse of the new webpage of the common European data space for cultural heritage

 

The common European data space for cultural heritage comprises cutting-edge infrastructure, a vibrant community and a suite of products, frameworks and tools which facilitate the open and trustworthy sharing of heritage data across Europe.

We are excited about the launch of a webpage which offers a gateway into the common European data space for cultural heritage.

The data space works to increase participation in Europe’s cultural heritage and promotes digital culture as a public good. It offers access to high-quality data, with an emphasis on 3D, and encourages people to reuse it and find new value in it. Together with 13 other data spaces, it’s central in Europe’s ambition for a thriving, data-driven society.  It offers enormous potential for the cultural heritage sector and Europe’s citizens. Communicating this potential is critical to ensure that the benefits are felt and opportunities seized. The data space webpage is a way to build understanding of the data space, its distinctive features, the partners that make it possible, the role the Europeana Initiative plays in it, as well as opportunities to contribute to and benefit from it.

The webpage offers an attractive overview of the activities taking place across the data space. Use it to discover the data space in numbers, the partners and organisations behind it, projects which support it and its principal products, developed by the Europeana Initiative. As the data space grows and evolves, the dedicated webpage will continue to be enriched – so stay tuned for fresh updates!

Greenway: the INCULTUM pilot of GAL Elimos

The development of the Greenway Kaggera-Vita-Salemi is part of the pilot coordinated by GAL Elimos in the frame of the INCULTUM project.

The encounter of 29/4/2024 hosted by the University of Palermo has been the occasion to present the results of the research and to review together the status of progress of the implementation of the project.

Mining Treasures of Central Slovakia: successful INCULTUM pilot

An international conference dedicated to the Mining Cultural Heritage of Central Slovakia was held in the city of Banská Bystrica on April 25, 2025, as part of the international innovation project INCULTUM.

The goal of the conference was to present the mining heritage of central Slovakia, with a focus on the Barbora route, to exchange knowledge and experience from the development of mining cultural routes in Europe with members of Mines B. – European Mining Routes of Santa Barbara Federation and beyond, and to strengthen the creation of networks between various interested parties to support the use of the participatory platform Mining Treasures.

The conference was attended by international guests from six foreign countries, namely Italy, Spain, Belgium, Slovenia, and Poland.

INCULTUM pilot at Castelnuovo di Garfagnana, 20 May 2024
San Pellegrino in Alpe: a tale between past and present

On 20 May, 2024 a very interesting  event will take place at the ‘Vittorio Alfieri’ Theatre of Castelnuovo di Garfagnana (Province of Lucca).

The event is conceived as a dissemination space for the entire Garfagnana territory and the neighbouring Mediavalle del Serchio valley. The coordinators of the project and the researchers involved will talk about the objectives of the INCULTUM project and the results obtained by pilot run in San Pellegrino in Alpe. This will be followed by reflections on the possibilities of using cultural tourism as a tool for the socio-economic revitalisation of peripheral territories and the Garfagnana area in particular.

The conference will be attended by students from the ‘ISI Garfagnana’ high school, provincial and regional politicians, local tourism operators, stakeholders, amd teachers involved in the training activities.

The event will be complemented by the theatrical performance ‘Un prete, due santi, un confine e 4000 pezzi unici’ (A priest, two saints, a border and 4,000 unique pieces), performed by the actress Elisabetta Salvatori.

The event is in Italian language.

Graphiae: a new art installation by Gianluca Cingolani

Graphiae, the digital artist Gianluca Cingolani’s new project, was unveiled at Porta di Milano, Terminal 1 of Milan Malpensa International Airport.

Graphiae takes us back to thousands of years ago, when one of the greatest inventions was made. It was when human beings began to shape their imagination, inventing symbols, words, ideas and creating writing. In Graphiae, digital art explores the gesture of an original writing, the Chinese one, that still maintains a very strong connection with images.

 

The installation is part of an artistic project that Gianluca Cingolani has developed in recent years together with the G_B collective, aiming at exploring the processes of invention and the role that imagination plays in these processes. The artist investigates this invention through the artistic technique of digital compositing, staging a multimedia polyptych that animates the signs of an ancient Chinese writing.

Symbols are isolated within boxes that go to form an ever-changing graphemic matrix, where the focus goes to the unexpected relationships of meaning suggested by their morphologies: the artist explores their ideographic structure to reflect on the reversibility of the symbol into icon, to remind us that writing is a purely conventional system ready to become an image or to return to physical trace.

“Cingolani’s animated writing takes the form of a renewed game of surrealist ascendancy based on the free relations of meaning that arise from the complicit and sinuous tensions dictated by these threadlike entities, these signs so foreign and familiar that they seem to have belonged to us forever.”
