On 3 November 2014 in Limassol, Cyprus, RICHES particpated in the 5th International Euro-Mediterranean Conference (EuroMed 2014), held on 3-8 November. This symposium, organised by CODIGT and held in Karlsruhe on 14 November 2014 at the ZAK Centre, was devoted to the goal of raising societal awareness about the benefits of archives and archiving in the digital domain. Politicians, the public and society at large should be made aware that archiving will remain a general task in which each person can play a role. There are other advantages in having only ebooks. The archive consists of about 135,000 ebooks, and funds are available for acquiring, on demand, new e-texts that are not present yet in the library; in a physical library with shelves and pyles of volumes, to have such a richness and amount of books would not be possible – and next to that, search and retrieval of information would be certainly more difficult than within the digital library. On 4-5 December 2014, RICHES’ First International Conference will be held in Pisa, at the Museum of Graphics of Palazzo Lanfranchi. The event, patronised by the Italian Ministry of Economic Development, the Tuscany Region, the Municipality of Pisa, the University of Pisa and Fondazione Sistema Toscana, is organised by RICHES partner Promoter Srl. The conference, entitled “Cultural Heritage: Recalibrating Relationships” considers the over-arching objective of the project: how to reduce the distance between people and culture and recalibrate the relationship between heritage professional and heritage users. Such recalibration process will maximise cultural creativity and ensure that the whole European community can benefit from the social and economic potential of Cultural Heritage. Continue reading
The project will develop a Roadmap for Citizen Researchers in the age of Digital Culture. On the first two days of September, the premises of the Ministero dello Sviluppo Economico will host the CIVIC EPISTEMOLOGIES Kick-off Meeting, which brought together 12 cultural institutions and archives, universities, research centres and innovative SMEs from all over Europe. The meeting represented a very good opportunity to discuss in more detail the strategy and recommendations presented in the DCH-RP roadmap for preservation and how to prepare for future cooperation. On the 3rd and 4th of June 2014, the National Archives of Sweden hosted in Stockholm two workshops organised by DCH-RP in cooperation with EUDAT on the theme of digital preservation of cultural data. The first one focused on the roadmap for the long-term preservation of DCH, while the second one discussed the trust issues to be addressed. Continue reading
