Announcing the 2015 CyArk 500 Annual Summit

The CyArk 500 Annual Summit is an international event held to advance the goals of the CyArk 500 Challenge, CyArk’s initiative to digitally preserve 500 cultural heritage sites within five years. In recognition of the global scale of this programme, the event is held in a different capitol city each year. In 2015, the Annual Summit will be hosted in Berlin, Germany, at the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin, on 20-21 October. The organising theme of the CyArk 500 Annual Summit is “Resilience through Innovation: Countering escalating threats to our cultural heritage by rethinking preservation through digital technology”. I AM: the calls for AR products are launched!

After the call for the best video mapping projects to be projected on the external façade of Lo Quarter, Municipality of Alghero publishes the call for apps addressed to children, apt to promote the archaeological site of nuraghe Palmavera, and the call for innovative audio-visual products based on remote controlled devices. The public presentation of the tools developed by the participants will take place during the I AM closing festival, being held from 25 to 27 September 2015 and making Alghero set of the great augmented reality (AR) international festival. NeDiMAH presents Space and Time Visualisation

By Maria Boştenaru Dan and Cerasella Crăciun, the book brings together experiences and expertise from NeDiMAH (Network for Digital Methods in Arts and Humanities). It examines mapping methods, procedures, tools, criticism, awareness, challenges and solutions around the concepts of “Space and Time” and “Information Visualisation”. Romanian contributions to the survey which the book emerges from are mainly from two fields, namely landscape planning and architectural design, including digital methods for the representation of natural disasters. I AM calls for projects in augmented reality

As leader of project “I AM – International Augmented Med”, Municipality of Alghero aims to pinpoint projects able to promote and improve, through state-of-the-art augmented reality (AR) technologies, the cultural and environmental heritage of its territory for tourism development. The announcement will contain technical specifications and provide grants for the best projects, to be evaluated by a specific committee.The public presentation of the deliverables will take place during the I AM closing festival, being held in Alghero from 25 to 27 September 2015. Atlantic Slave Trade in 3D by Zamani project

Trading castles and fortresses along the West African coast bear testimony to one of the saddest chapters of human history, the Atlantic Slave trade. The documentation of St. George’s castle in Elmina, Ghana, in 2006, was one of the first initiatives of the Zamani project. The experience drove Prof. Rüther, Zamani leader, to initiate a project thanks to which most of the architectural sites of the slave trade would be documented and relevant information gathered; Zamani decided then to create a Slave Trade Database, presenting 3D digital models of monuments and sites related to the slave trade together with other spatial and contextual information. To date four Castles and Forts have been documented in addition to Elmina. At present, Zamani is in quest of funding for further field campaigns in sites of the African West coast, elsewhere in Africa and possibly in the Americas. Continue reading


Zamani Project: report from Meroe, Sudan

Led by Prof. Heinz Rüther, since 2004 the Zamani project has been documenting African historical sites with the aim of creating accurate digital records for future generations. In March 2015 the Zamani partners went back to Sudan, where they had previously been to document the temple complex of Musawwarat es-Sufra. Objective of the new mission was to digitally record the Pyramids of Meroe (Begarawiyah), recognised as UNESCO World Heritage. Continue reading
