Transitions of Memory International Conference

Fondazione Fossoli promotes the International Conference titled “Transitions of Memory. Narratives of Violence in the 20th and 21th Centuries” planned for October 2021.
The conference invites scholars from all disciplines interested in the topics of memory to confront the subject of the memory of violence, its stratifications, narratives and transitions during the 20th century and up to the present from a multidisciplinary and comparative point of view. Insights are requested that relate to the different methods and multiple tools for recounting a traumatic event, from historical reconstruction to representation in artistic and architectural form, from the collection and presentation of testimonies to the use of media and new technologies. The papers can focus on Italian or foreign experiences – even making comparisons – and consider one or more aspects related to history, memory, the organisation of space, function and their narratives and representations, using a mono- or multidisciplinary approach.

#CharterAllianceEU: A new wide collaboration in the Cultural Heritage sector

The 29th April marked the official launch of a new European cross-border project: the European Cultural Heritage Skills Alliance CHARTER brings together the expertise of 47 European cultural heritage organisations to ensure a long-lasting and durable sector. Over four years, the Erasmus+ funded project will professionalise the sector and further demonstrate its contribution to sustainable and thriving societies and economies. CHARTER’s consortium is composed of 28 full and affiliate members, which represents some of the top European cultural heritage actors. All partners cover the 5 fields of analysis: safeguarding and preservation; crafts and traditional knowledge; dissemination and communication; knowledge; planning and management.
The project stems from the lack of statistical recognition of the cultural heritage (CH) sector since without it, the economic impact of the sector goes unnoticed. Consequently, its potential to strengthen European cultural identities and social cohesion cannot be realised.
The initiative will map the needs of the CH sector to identify skills shortages and mismatches to develop fitting training programmes for already active CH professionals. The Alliance will also support the educational system to be responsive and adapt curricula and learning goals in accordance with the actual needs of the sector. Upskilling of core and transversal skills will be made easy and lifelong exchange, capacity building and movement within Europe will be encouraged. All efforts combined will professionalise the sector and CHARTER will showcase that CH is integral in achieving social, economic and environmental sustainability.

Antonella Fresa interviewed by ESACH Association

The contribution of the REACH project to the European Youth Ambassador Programme

On April 12 2021, Antonella Fresa, REACH Network Coordinator, was invited to share the experiences and results of the social platform in the framework of the European Youth Ambassador Programme, a joint initiative by the European Students’ Association for Cultural Heritage (ESACH), Europa Nostra and the European Heritage Tribune (EHT) which aims at fostering the engagement of young people with cultural heritage.
The interview was carried on by two European ambassadors Héctor Manuel Aliaga De Miguel and Klaudia Chzhu and published by the European Heritage Tribune.
Antonella presented REACH, its origin, its mission and challenges but also the critical points and difficulties faced were highlighted to give a global overview of the work carried out during the three years of lifetime of the project.
The importance of telling daily life’s stories was underlined as the best contribution that everyone can offer in order to transmit culture and participate in increasing cultural heritage.
The Network Coordinator then proceeded with the description of the criteria for identifying good practices of participation for the REACH project and the needs that fostered the creation of a database at disposal to all experts of the cultural heritage sector. We sincerely hope that the testimony brought by our project will be useful to inspire further initiatives and to keep alive and preserve the European cultural heritage.

Europeana Digital Spring Programme 2021: A representation of 3D collection storage facilities

This meeting is related to Digital cultural heritage and social change.
It aims to face a debate about how 3D collection storage facilities could re-define museum practices, promote better understanding for the general public and educate the future generations.
Dr Marzia Loddo is the leader of the project ‘DIPOT: Digital Depot’ within the Marie Sklodowska-Curie LEaDing Fellows Programme and the Delft University of Technology. The one-hour workshop, will present the project and the results achieved so far with students of design and architecture.
It will be held through online interactive collaboration platforms and in breakout rooms and it will actively involve participants in a debate on the use of digital storage for different objectives such as sustainability, education, research, conservation, navigation and presentation.

Open call for artists - deadline 1st July 2021

International Festival Of Art, Theatre And New Technologies “The Wonders Of Possible”

Between November and December 2021, Kyber Theatre organises in Cagliari (Italy) the 8th Edition of the International Theatre, Art and New Technologies Festival called “The Wonders of Possible” – Le Meraviglie Del Possibile, LMDP.

LMDP Festival is the first of this kind in the whole Italy. Its aim is to promote the interrelation between artistic and technological languages.

Kyber Teatro – spin off of L’ Aquilone di Viviana (theatre and new technologies company, LMDP Festival organizer), addresses to Italian and International artists, also emerging companies and/or under 35 artists, an Open Call to submit their projects about “Interaction between arts and technology”.

Who can attend

The participation is open to:

Artists and Companies of every nationality
Also emerging companies and under 35 artists
to who works individually or in a group of maximum 3

Eligible projects

Theatre and new technologies plays
Art and new technologies performances
Installations that explore and realize the interaction between artwork, exhibition space and observers with the contribution of technology.

The theme of LMDP Festival is the interrelation between theatre, arts and new technologies.

The application must contain:

Artist’s CV;
Detailed description of the project (in PDF);
Technical rider;
Selection of max 5 photos;

The result is going to be notified only to selected projects by the Month of SEPTEMBER 2021.

Economic conditions:

The winners of the Open Call will have guaranteed the full coverage of the costs for mobility (travels to Cagliari, board and accommodation); coverage of agility costs and the “attendance fee” for the presentation of their performance for 2 evenings. If possible, we will cover also any material required for the presentation of the performance / show / installation (it will be subject to agreements with our technical director).

The winners, if interested, can present a technological artistic workshop with an entrance ticket for the audience.

Publication:

Applying for the call, the artists must provide a short biography and an abstract of the project and they agree that the material related to the project could be published on the Festival website and/or presented to the press for promotional purposes.

Archiving process:

Artists authorise Kyber Teatro – L’aquilone di Viviana to present their work, to store the material and make it accessible through the Festival’s website. All rights to the artwork and images will remain to the artist. The Organization is also entitled to document the event in all its phases through audio recordings, video or images.

Open Screen 2021 : Call out for disabled artists working in the digital realm

Developed in partnership with Shape Arts, Open Screen is seeking proposals for new works that respond to the theme of Realities, as part of arebyte on Screen, arebyte’s expanded and innovative online platform for digital animations, videos, web-based interactive experiences and curatorial interventions.

arebyte is inviting digital artists self-identifying as disabled to apply who work with technology to their advantage, or overcoming barriers, criticising matters of inclusivity within technology, and everything in between.

PAGODE – Europeana China at the basis of a students project

EU funded PAGODE – Europeana China project is making an impact on education, being included in a students project for the Master in Cultural Studies at KU Leuven. The organizing students of this “PAGODE group” are Gelan Cen, Lilia Chalakova, Shau Zou Fong, Jing Yun and Emily Jayne Benson-Kallman.

The project includes two elements, a video competition and an annotation sprint of digital collections. Both tasks are based on PAGODE’s crowdsourcing campaign launched in Autumn 2020, where a wealth of images about Chinese Heritage cultural collections, sourced from Europeana and carefully selected by PAGODE’s curator Sofie Taes, is available for users to play with.

In the video competition, participant students are expected to select one, several or a series of pictures from the Scenes and People from China campaign in the PAGODE crowdsourcing page and explain the reasons for their choices by recording a nice video to be shared on social media. The videos will be evaluated by an independent jury basing on a detailed evaluation system, to award the nicest one.

In the annotation sprint, participant students will be challenged to join the effort of annotating and curating photographic materials about Chinese culture that are currently published in Europeana, by looking at the images and adding descriptive tags selected from controlled vocabularies. Each addition counts points to the user, who is ranked in a lively classification of top-scoring. The annotation sprint will be open until 22nd of May and the overall target is to reach 24.000 annotations. The student who will have reached the higher score will be awarded as the winner. Afterwards, the annotations will be reviewed and validated by PAGODE experts and then sent to Europeana for publication.

The organizing students of the “PAGODE group” say “We are expecting to hear different voices from Chinese culture lovers by offering a unique opportunity for you to have an inner conversation with yourself. Every participant, in this case, can be recognized as a citizen historian who makes substantial contributions to safeguarding the memory of their past and paving a promising path for the future of their ethnicity. We hope, by holding an interactive and engaging event based on social media, we will be able to send the message that it is interesting and fashionable to talk about cultural heritage. Every piece of cultural heritage is a vivid and faithful reflection of daily life in the past. Therefore, people should be handed the power to share what they think about a particular cultural heritage and why they feel related to it.”

Social cohesion and development through Arts and Culture: the Tiro Association

“We believe that culture and arts can bring together people and bring together different social groups by engaging everyone in various creative and artistic activities.”

The Tiro Association for Arts (TAA) is a non-governmental organization that works since 2014 on bringing together youth of different cultural, religious and ethnic backgrounds to create an alternative and critical movement through arts and culture. Moreover, it works to foster culture in marginalized areas in the south of Lebanon to oppose the polarization, hatred and violence that are common for the areas it works in.
TAA believes culture and arts can be strong drivers of development, social cohesion and, ultimately, change. So, TAA aspires to provide young people in our community with independent spaces where they can freely express themselves, attend free artistic trainings and events.

Research and digital cultural heritage: new impact horizons

On 11 and 12 May 2021, Europeana will bring together cultural heritage professionals, policy makers, academics and researchers to discuss impact horizons of research when nurtured by digital cultural heritage.

Digital content and technology democratise access to cultural heritage and can stimulate positive social and economic change, especially when they support Research and Innovation. The cultural heritage sector is exploring new ways of community engagement, participatory and co-creation processes, in parallel with researchers in the Social Sciences and Humanities, who are the most interested in the potential reuse of digital cultural heritage. For their part, policy-makers and funders increasingly require social impact to be considered in research design and outcomes.

This symposium is the first event that brings together an impact-oriented approach and the research perspective within the Europeana context. The scientific committee has arranged the programme across four sessions to facilitate participation from different time zones. Twenty speakers will represent the research and cultural heritage sectors and the policy making sphere.

Immaterial Future Innovation Award

April 19–June 1, 2021

Immaterial Future association is calling for innovative solutions that contribute to unleash the full power of culture. The winner will receive €50,000 non-equity funding to be awarded during the ceremony at viennacontemporary art fair in September, 2021 in Vienna, Austria.

The open call welcomes projects that leverage technology to develop:

new business models that enable self-sustainable cultural production and distribution;
distribution models that allow wide access to cultural experiences without losing authenticity.
