Unit B6 “Reflective Societies” of DG Research & Innovation of the European Commission (EC) is currently working with the project IMPACT-EV on a report aimed at evaluating the social, political and scientific impacts of SSH research from a SSH perspective, in order to illustrate the relevance and importance of SSH research in our societies. RICHES recently gave its contribution to the survey by delivering to the EC and the IMPACT-EV consortium a review of its scientific and research activities. Continue reading
This policy brief offers a way of thinking about copyright that is designed to reflect the changes wrought in and on the cultural heritage sector by digitisation and can be used as an impetus for change in law and in practice. It is mainly for European policy-makers but also cultural heritage institutions are interested in this policy brief because of the significant roles they have in the changing cultural heritage landscape within Europe. On 18 June 2015, the countryside of Valdera (Pisa, Italy) was seat of an interesting international meeting, focussed on the role of food as element of the European cultural heritage (CH) and aimed at discussing how the changes within our society may have an impact on the wine & food traditions of a territory. Results of this workshop, held in the framework of the RICHES project, will merge into a public document, constituting the base of a policy brief addressed towards the European Commission. weLand Association is a cultural NGO founded in Asti, South Piedmont (Italy), in August 2012. Its aim is to develop a regional network of individuals and groups interested in aggregating, sharing and reusing open data for GLAMs, education institutions and tourism stakeholders. The idea of the association arises from the firm belief that innovation (and so the elements which innovation is generated by, culture and creativity) should take into account a bottom-up engagement of the community, in order to fully realise its potential and to become a real driver of social and economic development. Working paper by Karol J. Borowiecki and Trilce Navarrete. One of the available tools in cultural policy at the national level includes the reduction of VAT rates for cultural goods and services. An improved understanding of the reduced cultural taxes will allow to effectively employ this policy in order to support consumption of, among others, the fast growing digital heritage markets, such as the e-books market. A reduction in VAT rates can stimulate household consumption and consequently should be designed in conjunction with a national cultural policy. Continue reading

In order to understand this context of change, the RICHES project organised a workshop at the Turkish National Library (Ankara, Turkey). Two intense days of discussion allowed the participants to discuss key questions about how these transformations are evolving, and identify the main opportunities and trends for the upcoming years.
