For this edition of Who’s Using What, Gregory Markus looks towards the digital preservation challenges that GLAMs face. He interviewed two developers from the PREFORMA Project: Xavi Tarres from Easy Innova (who is working on DPF Manager, the conformance checker for TIFF images) and Jérôme Martinez from MediaArea (who is working on MediaConch, the conformance checker for MKV/FFv1 audiovisual files). MediaConch Newsletter #4 – April 2016

MediaArea Team released version 16.03 of MediaConch, the open source conformance checker for audiovisual files. Among the latest updates, it now supports plugins including VeraPDF and DPFManager, the other two PREFORMA conformance checkers for electronic documents and still images. veraPDF 0.12 released alongside first version of wiki validation rules

veraPF’s latest software is now available for download in the Open Source Portal. The veraPDF validation engine implements the PDF/A specification using formalisations of each requirement in PDF/A-1, PDF/A-2 and PDF/A-3. The wiki determines each rule used by the software and provides details on the error(s) triggering a failure of the rule. Continue reading

PREFORMA presented at ILIDE 2016, Innovative Library in Digital Era

Antonella Fresa, Technical Coordinator of PREFORMA, presented the project at the 19th edition of the ILIDE Conference. The presentation focused in particular on the open source approach and on the forthcoming testing phase, showing how the conformance checkers can be used and integrated in other systems. Results of the EC concertation meeting for PCP projects

The third concertation meeting for on-going PCP projects in DG Connect, organised by the European Commission in Brussels on 10 March 2015, gave the opportunity to the attendees to network and share experiences on common issues that they face while implementing PCPs. veraPDF version 0.10 released

The latest version of veraPDF is now available for download in the PREFORMA Open Source Portal. veraPDF is building the definitive, file-format validator for all parts and conformance levels of ISO 19005 (PDF/A). This version contains several feature enhancements (conformance checker, command line, and test corpus) as well as some bug fixes. This marks the end of the PREFORMA project’s first re-design phase. PREFORMA @ AppHub SQuAT Fest 2016

Benjamin Yousefi represented the PREFORMA project at the AppHub SQuAT Fest 2016. As main recommendation, PREFORMA should encourage its suppliers to use AppHub as an additional channel to distribute the conformance checkers, and to evaluate and incorporate the code quality and OSS risk management documents and best practices developed by the AppHub community. Software benchmarking in digital preservation

PREFORMA visits the three suppliers

Between 20 and 30 January 2016, a team of representatives of the PREFORMA project visited the three consortia that are currently working in the prototyping phase: veraPDF, Easy Innova and MediaArea.net.
